Published: 12/14/2009
Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) has been awarded the annual Young Professionals Choice Award. This award recognizes an organization in the Greater Omaha community that excels in their efforts to attract, retain and develop young professionals. OPPD will be announced as the official winner at the Young Professionals Summit on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at Qwest Center Omaha. Koley Jessen is the award sponsor. The media sponsor of the award is The Reader.
"OPPD is honored to be recognized for the work we are doing to attract young professionals," said Gary Gates, president and CEO of OPPD. "We know that our future leaders are embodied in the young people we hire today. We are committed to ensuring that they receive the training, development and knowledge sharing that will allow them to take this utility to new heights in the future. On a personal note, I love the interaction and different perspectives I get from our younger workforce. I see a lot of talent and determination in the newer employees, and I have every confidence that they will achieve many successes for OPPD."
Young professionals submitted fifty-six nominations for the award. From the 37 companies that completed the application process, five finalists were selected. These finalists included Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, ConAgra Foods, Cox, Omaha Public Power District and Thrasher Basement Systems, Inc. The Young Professionals Choice Award selection committee toured each business where they met with the management team and a small group of young professionals.
"OPPD has created an environment where staff at all levels of the company can have an active role in shaping the future of the organization," said Kirsten Case-Penrod, manager of the Greater Omaha Young Professionals. "Not only do their employees have a variety of ways to grow personally and professionally, but their voice counts and their ideas are heard."
